What is chiropractic & can it help?
The World Health Organisation defines chiropractic as: “A health care profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on general health”.
For 25 years the Chiropractors chiropractic clinics in Solihull and Sutton Coldfield have been helping people with back pain, lumbago, sciatica, neck pain, migraines, headaches which come from the neck, joint pains, other aches and pains and, even, tension and inability to relax.
We are dedicated to helping you get well and stay well naturally, without drugs or surgery. We aim to get to the root cause of your pain instead of masking your symptoms which are usually a call for help.
Chiropratic Training
Proper training is essential both to be able to determine whether chiropractic is the correct therapy for you or whether you need to see another healthcare professional. Unfortunately, in some, fairly rare, cases more sinister conditions can present as if they were musculoskeletal. All of our chiropractors have a minimum of 4 year chiropractic degree and are registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) which upholds standards. Only people registered with the GCC can call themselves chiropractors or claim to practice chiropractic.
Central to the philosophy at our chiropractic clinics in Solihull and Sutton Coldfield are the facts that we are all self-regulating and self-healing organisms and the most important system we all have in maintaining this incredible ability is the nervous system. So, our aim is simply to remove any interference in the way the nerves transmit messages between the brain and rest of the body. We then let your inbuilt regulating and healing mechanisms do the rest. We are not alone in this approach, even surgeons rely on these mechanisms after the major trauma of surgery.
Because of the close relationship between spine and the majority of nerves that come out of the spine, the abnormal movement of the spine can cause interference to the messages going between the brain and rest of the body. Chiropractors may call this situation a “fixation” or “subluxation”.
The subluxation or fixation can be caused by recent knocks and falls (acute problems) but, much more commonly, the problems we see are caused by a long-term lack of regular varied movement, poor posture and repetitive jobs. These chronic problems may have been building up for years. For example, for many years chiropractors have known that prolonged sitting caused musculoskeletal problems but it is now increasingly recognised that it negatively effects health in general.
Chiropractors primarily treat these fixations or subluxations with “adjustments” which often involve a fast low force applied to the joint applied joint with the chiropractor’s hand or a mechanical instrument. The aim of the adjustment is to restore normal movement. There may be a popping noise which may sound quite dramatic but is simply an insignificant release of gas.
With recent problems in young people symptoms may resolve after a few adjustments. In long standing more severe problems in older people the tissues around the joint may have adapted to the abnormal movement pattern so a course of treatment and maintenance, similar to wearing retainers after braces, may be necessary.
